The Swim is a 1.2 mile open-water swim through outer New Bedford Harbor from Davy's Locker in New Bedford to Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven. Each year, hundreds of swimmers ages 12 and up plunge into Buzzards Bay and prove that the Swim is for every age, shape, size, ability, and fitness level. The course through warm water draws serious competitors, first-timers, families, teams, and everyone in between.
Your Swim is a great way to get your family, friends, and co-workers to help you Save Buzzards Bay. We ask that you raise a minimum of $150 (although some swimmers have been known to raise well over $1,000).
At the Start of the Swim in New Bedford, you can expect safety information, on-the-water support, plenty of water to keep you hydrated, and volunteers who are there to make sure your Swim is safe and that you are ready to go. We even time the event to coincide with the incoming tide to help you along and to further demonstrate that the Bay is your friend!

Gazela Primeiro, a 108-year old Portuguese cod fishing ship, will be visiting New Bedford from July 29 to Aug 2, 2010. Learn the ropes in this Introduction to Tall Ship Sailing, taught by the crew of the Philadelphia's Tall Ship, the Barkentine Gazela. This hands-on course covers knot tying, sail handling and includes an insider's tour of Gazela. The class runs 2 hours and is open to the public. Participants should be in reasonable physical condition and should be able to sustain strenuous activity. Gazela will not leave the dock during the training session. All participants will receive a certificate upon completion.
Class is weather dependent; high winds will prevent the setting of sail. If raining, the class will be rescheduled by the captain of the ship.

AHA Nights nights are held on the second Thursday of each month from 5:00 - 9:00 PM and involve over 50 downtown museums, galleries, arts organizations, merchants, restaurants, The New Bedford Whaling Museum, The UMass Dartmouth CVPA Star Store and New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. Each months event is themed so that distinctive cultural programs are presented and creative partner involvement remains robust. Nights such as Changing Facade, On Stage, Summer Sounds and Kids Rule consistently draw upwards of 2,000 visitors from the city, surrounding towns, Providence and Cape Cod. These events present opportunities for performers, artists and humanitarians of all disciplines and levels to engage the public. On a typical AHA Night several art exhibits open, multiple live music is presented, theater skits or a lecture take place and interactive family and adult cultural experiences abound. This night is known as one of the best times to experience New Bedfords cultural renaissance in its historic cobblestoned downtown.
